Frequently Asked Questions: Naviator

  • Where is the user manual?

A user manual can be found at this link: http://www.naviatorapp.com/help/naviatorusermanual.pdf.

The user manual is periodically updated as new features become available, so check back often.

  • Do I need an internet connection to use Naviator? Will it work with my WiFi-only tablet?

An internet connection is only required to initially download the charts and databases, and for weather updates. When you are flying no internet connection is required to use Naviator.

    WiFi-only tablets are definitely supported!

  • Can I try Naviator before I buy it?

Yes, new customers get a no-obligation 30 day free trial when they register an account.

  • Does Naviator work in Canada?

Yes, definitely! The following data is currently available for our Canadian customers:

    • Airspace (class C/D/E/F)
    • Airports
    • Navaids
    • Weather including METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs and SIGMETs
    • High-resolution terrain with color-coded terrain warnings

The above features do not require a subscription and are available for a one-time fee of $14.99 CAD.

  • Can I use the same Naviator account on my phone and my tablet?

Yes, all Naviator subscriptions can be shared between two Android devices.

  • Does Naviator show my position on approach plates and airport diagrams?

Yes, with an optional Seattle Avionics ChartData subscription Naviator will show your position on approach plates and airport diagrams.

  • How much disk space does Naviator need?

Each chart is typically around 50 megabytes. Most people only require 1 or 2 gigabytes of disk space to use Naviator, however the entire dataset is between 6 and 7 gigabytes.

  • Will Naviator work with my tablet?

Probably. Naviator will work with most Android 2.2 or higher devices. For the best experience we recommend Android 3.1 or higher tablets with at least a 1ghz processor and 512 megabytes of RAM.

If your tablet doesn't have an internal GPS receiver it is still possible to use Naviator as an EFB, however your location will not be shown on the charts.

  • Can I use an external Bluetooth GPS with Naviator?

Yes, a number of our customers have had success using external Bluetooth GPS receivers. However, this is currently an "unofficial" feature.

You will need to allow "mock locations" by going to the Android settings screen, tapping on "Applications", then "Development", then make sure "Allow mock locations" is selected. You will also need to install an app that will make the output from the Bluetooth GPS available to Naviator. There are many such apps, but customers have reported success using this one.

  • I fly a turboprop or jet and Naviator keeps saying "No GPS". Why won't it work?

In general, the GPS receivers used in smartphones and tablets are not the same quality as the GPS receivers found in a dedicated aviation GPS such as those made by Garmin. They almost always have speed and altitude limits that will be easily exceeded by a typical turboprop or jet aircraft.

If you are flying anything much faster than 200 knots you will probably need to use an external Bluetooth GPS such as the GlobalSat BT-368i. Dedicated Bluetooth GPS receivers generally have limits of 1,000 knots and 60,000 feet.

This problem isn't specific to Naviator, it's unfortunately due to the fact that smartphone and tablet manufactures tend to favor low cost GPS receivers in their designs.

  • Why does Naviator keep the GPS on when I quit the app?

This is caused by one of the things that makes Android so great: multitasking. When you use the 'Home' button to quit Naviator, it doesn't actually exit the app. Naviator will keep running in the background so that you can quickly and easily switch back to it when you are finished with the other task.

To really quit Naviator, you need to use the 'Back' button. Using the back button will ensure the GPS does not keep running after you are done with Naviator.
